If you are undertaking work experience your employer may request you to organise insurance. The type of work experience will determine whether the university or employer should provide insurance.
Work Integrated Learning
Where you are enrolled in a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) unit and are undertaking work placements, internships and practicum as part of a course of study in Australia, you are covered by QUT's Personal Accident, Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Medical Malpractice insurance policy. Insurance for WIL placements is issued by faculties and students requiring further information on their insurance policies need to consult with their WIL unit coordinator.
Real World Placement Program
Under certain conditions insurance coverage is also available for unpaid work experience outside the curriculum (not for credit) as part of the QUT Real World Placement Program (RWPP).
Unpaid work experience placements that have been arranged through the RWPP are covered by QUT's Personal Accident insurance policy.
If you have organised your own work experience placement that is unpaid, you will need to submit a Placement Assessment Form for consideration by the RWPP team. You will be notified of the outcome of your application within ten working days.
Volunteering with Not-For-Profit Organisations
Registered not-for-profit organisations are expected to use their own insurance policies to provide you with coverage when you are volunteering with them. You will need to confirm with the not-for-profit organisation what your insurance coverage is prior to starting your volunteering.
Paid Work Experience
If the work experience you are undertaking is paid work, you are essentially an 'employee' of that organisation and will be covered by the organisation's insurance under your contract of work.
Other Unpaid Work Experience
QUT will only provide insurance for unpaid work experience placements that are part of a WIL unit, the RWPP or the Career Mentor Scheme.
