Speaker:
Hi, my name is Alan McAlpine and I am the manager of Careers and Employment at Queensland University of Technology, in Brisbane Australia. I would like to introduce you to an exciting new project called the Career Development Programs. The suite career development programs are an innovative way to embed career learning into the curriculum. The key to the success of this multi-award winning project is the collaboration between the Universities Teaching and Learning Support services, University academics and careers and employment.
QUT has three Real World Learning & Teaching Commissioned projects. It has been in addressing the needs of these three major strategic projects that has resulted in the development of these programs.
The RWL projects are each addressed by two programs. University Preparation and Career Preparation relate to Transitions In. Work placement preparation and Career management relate to Work Integrated Learning and finally Graduate Careers and Workplace Resilience relate to the transition out project.
The suite of programs comprises 30 modules that span 6 programs. The intention is that a student will complete 5 core modules and 1 elective, therefore completing a program. The module content is based upon current career theories and resources and are highly engaging and interactive.
Each module is built on the university's online teaching platform, Blackboard making it easy for academics to embed the content into the curriculum. Modules can also be accessed outside the teaching arena through the careers and employment web pages.
A certificate of completion is generated for students gaining 80% in a quiz at the end of each module.
Modules can be used by any faculty at the University. Content is generic in nature though in some cases specific discipline content has been developed. Students enroll for the modules by discipline and adaptive release allows them to access specific content of relevance to them.
All 7 of QUT’s faculties have been involved in using the modules.
