To develop your career while you are still studying, and, improve your chances of employment as a graduate, work experience is invaluable. Work experience provides a link between theoretical issues and the world of work. They can take many forms and be categorised under different headings: volunteer work, internships, and work placements. These experiences usually have two things in common: they are not permanent positions and they involve training in the work place. Many positions are unpaid.
The advantages of undertaking work experience include
- enabling you to investigate the employment market and experience the specific work place
- providing you with referees and references for the resume and general recruitment purposes
- providing you with demonstrated abilities for Selection Criteria and interviews eg examples of problem solving, initiative, team work, etc
- enabling employers to observe potential employees in the work place
- increasing realism leading to sounder career choices.
