Unpaid work experience (which is not a course requirement)

If you are undertaking work experience, which is not a requirement of your course, you should organise to be covered by the University's Personal Accident policy. Often your employer will request you to provide evidence of this insurance cover. If you require such insurance you should download the Work Experience Insurance Application or collect one at a Careers and Employment Office.

Both you and the employer need to complete the respective sections on the form and submit it to a Careers and Employment Office. Alternatively, fax the completed form to 07 3138 2368 or email it as an attachment to careers@qut.edu.au. A Careers and Employment staff member will sign and record your application and photocopies of the signed form will be returned to you and your employer.

Conditions

This scheme is available to QUT students who wish to obtain voluntary work in an area that is related to their current course of study. The following conditions must be adhered to:

  • The student must be currently enrolled, or have graduated within the last six months
  • The students must obtain their own work placement
  • The work must be approved by QUT Careers and Employment staff as being relevant to their degree/area of study
  • The employer must formally agree to supervise the student on-site
  • A start and end date must be specified - the form should be submitted to QUT Careers and Employment atleast 2 working days prior to the start date
  • Both the student and employer need to sign the registration form

Work experience (for course requirement)

For courses where this is a mandatory requirement to undertake formal work experience, you should contact your School office to organise your nisurance cover. This type of work experience will be fully covered by the appropriate QUT insurance. The extent of insurance cover will vary depending on whether your work experience is paid or unpaid.

Paid work experience

If the work experience you are undertaking is paid work, you are essentially an 'employee' of that organisation and will be covered by the organisation's insurance under your work contract.
