There is a range of strategies and resources you can use to undertake job seeking whether that be for full-time, contract, voluntary or casual work or to help you get vacation work, an internship or a work placement site. A thorough search for work positions requires that you utilize all possible strategies to obtain leads about positions.

The following indicates the effectiveness of various strategies:

  • 1 out of 2 jobs are obtained from personal contacts
  • 1 out of 4 jobs are obtained from employer contacts
  • 1 out of 20 jobs are obtained from newspaper ads
  • 1 out of 25 jobs are obtained from employment agencies

Employers prefer to hire people who come personally recommended. Therefore, to be successful, you should devote much time to developing your network and maintaining contacts. Use a mixture of traditional and creative work search strategies.

Below is a chart which compares the strategies used by employers to find employees with the strategies used most often by people searching for work.

Strategies

Most employers usually start to look for someone to fill an opening by asking whether there is anyone in the company who wants a transfer. If this is not successful, they will likely ask friends and colleagues if they know of anyone who is qualified and needs work. They will then usually go through the more formal procedures and finally put an ad in the newspaper if the position remains open. The majority of job seekers, however, usually start to look for work by going to the newspaper classifieds. If they do not find a job, they will go to employment centres and use the other strategies listed in the chart. Networking is often the last strategy job seekers will use to find work and many do not use networking to find the jobs before they are advertised.

As you can see, as job seekers you would have better success if you include networking to access the internal job market. Do not rely on one strategy to search for work. Use all the strategies to increase your chance of success, especially networking
