  QML Pathology

QML Pathology on the Sunshine Coast has always welcomed the opportunity to have QUT Medical Science students in their Buderim laboratory. ‘WIL allows us to train students for the future and the time and money we invest significantly benefits our organisation in the long term. Our 2009 WIL student, Ellen, was so impressive we offered her a casual position while she completes her degree. This investment in training and mentoring is invaluable as we generally employ graduates from QUT. Their ability to integrate classroom theory with practical work situations makes them highly sought after and valued members of our organisation.’

Samantha Branch Manager, QML Pathology, Sunshine Coast

For QUT Medical Science student Ellen, the chance to participate in work placement while studying was a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in her chosen industry. ‘While completing my placement at QML Pathology on the Sunshine Coast I was given fantastic opportunities to work in a range of departments and spend time learning from skilled medical scientists. The chance to ask questions and gain hands-on practice in such a welcoming environment really enhanced my experience at the lab. To be offered a casual position at the end is a dream come true. It is a golden chance to expand my knowledge and practical skills and prepare myself for graduate employment.’

Department of Transport and Main Roads

In her role as Communications Project Manager at the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Sarah valued the innovation and fresh thinking that QUT Creative Industries student Bronwyn brought to the Busway project they worked on. ‘When you’ve worked on a project for so long, you tend to think of what you know. Bronwyn had a much broader view, beyond the traditional square. Having Bronwyn and her technical knowledge was like having the support of a 2-i-c.’

Sarah Communications Project Manager, Department of Transport and Main Roads

QUT student Bronwyn ventured into the communications team at the Department of Transport and Main Roads and gained insight into the role of communications professionals. ‘Not only did I meet the Premier at a press conference, but back at the office I was helping draft speeches for future events! The experience inspired me because Sarah (project coordinator) was a great mentor. In a few years, I’d love to be in a similar role. My industry placement highlighted the relevance of my degree to the real world.’
