Using your contacts can be key to finding your ideal job. Knowing your potential employer prior to position advertisement can put you ahead of the recruitment game.

What is networking?

Networking, or creative job searching is about making use of the people you know to discover how they, or someone they know, could help or provide you with some useful information. The most common mistake people make is to assume that because the people you know are not in your field of interest that they cannot help.

For some, the term networking has negative connotations. It is true that it is something that comes easier to some than others. You need to be able to develop the skills to network in a way that is both comfortable and useful to you. It certainly doesn't mean boring people at every opportunity about your job searching. It is more about sharing information of common interest. You will have to contribute as much as you receive.

Put simply, in a job searching context, networking is about talking to other people. Networking is an important route into many professions and is, therefore, a skill worth developing.

So, while you might think that you have no contacts, this section will help you explore the contacts you do have and help you reach further than the first level of people that you know into the next level, the people that THEY know.
