Introduction to Search Strategies

As the model on the Self Assessment pages suggests, this is the final stage of your process to finding the job you really want. Once you have done all the self assessment and decision making you will have completed about 80% of your preparation to finding a job. Also, this final stage, seeking out and securing a viable opportunity, is something that you will likely have to repeat numerous times. Not only now in finding the first position out of your postgraduate studies, but they are valuable skills that you will use in the rest of your career.

A useful way to think about your job searching campaign is like a sales process. When an organisation is selling a product or service. There are a few basic steps that they will generally go through. We can align each of these to searching for work.

Product:

The company must know their product inside out (strengths and weaknesses) to enable them to convince people to buy it.

You:

Self understanding (strengths and weaknesses) is key to allow you to be able to sell yourself to the maximum

Brochure:

Most organisations will have a brochure that they can leave with their potential customers. It only tells them about the good stuff.

Resume:

Your resume is your brochure. It needs to sell all the good stuff about you and target the key needs of the customer (employer)

Marketing:

How does the organisation let the customer know they have a product. They need to tell them in as many ways as possible.

Networking:

You need to let your potential customers (employers) aware of your existence and continue to widen the markets awareness of your existence

Sales Pitch:

Any sales person will have a short pitch to encourage te customer to use their product or service over a competitors

Interview:

You must be prepared to sell your key attributes in a way that convinces the employer you have what is needed.

Close:

The customer agrees to purchasing the product or service.

Job Offer:

Contract is on the table

  • Identifying your skills
    • This you will have already completed if you have been through the self assessment section. Visit it now if you have not already done this.

  • Applications
    • This is your step in the door. Often your first impression to a potential future employer. So your presentation of your application has to say the right things about you and also convince the employer you have what they are looking for.

  • Networking for Job Success
    • Using your contacts can be key to finding your ideal job. Knowing your potential employer prior to position advertisement can put you ahead of the recruitment game.

  • Interviews
    • Great, your application has worked. Now you must demonstrate face to face that your enthusiasm and passion for what you want to do show through.
