While it is nice when a future employer has funding that you can use, it will do your chances no harm to start looking for your own funding or scholarships that will help you get into your area of interest. Going through the process will also show commitment to the potential future employer as well as giving you experience that will be useful in the future should you continue down the academic research pathway.

The activity of sourcing and applying for funding will also keep you in control as well as enabling you to organise your thoughts as to where your future research ideas fit in. Very few future employers will turn down an opportunity to get their names on new publications if you are doing some of the hard work (i.e. finding funding) for them.
