You may now have identified a group of potential people that you might like to approach to discuss future opportunities. You still need to do some homework, however. It is important that you have a sound grasp of their area of interest and have read their key publications. This will allow you to have a sensible conversation with them and demonstrate enthusiasm towards their area.

You may only get a brief opportunity to speak with the person, say at a conference for example. It is, therefore, important that not only do you know their area intimately but that you also have prepared what you will say to them. In careers we call this the two minute drill. What can you say about yourself in a short space of time that will enable that person to remember you in the future? How can you make future contact and start a dialogue with them about future opportunities?

Activity 5 in the workbook will help you explore some of these questions. It is important that you practice your two minute drill and make it sound natural enough that it doesn't come across as too well prepared and stilted.
