Careers Self Assessment tools

Here we present a series of exercises. The self paced activities are based around the workshop titled "8 Attributes of successful postdocs?. This section is specifically designed for individuals considering undertaking a postdoctoral route to further employment, probably in a research and/or academic environment. Further self assessment exercises exist on the Careers and Employment page. The career planning module (select career planning under the undergraduate drop down menu) helps you look at strengths and weaknesses in a more general sense and helps you to consider how to apply them to your job search strategy.

Eight Attributes of Highly Successful postdocs

If you are currently completing your PhD and thinking of a career in research and postdoctoral research is one the options that interest you, then you might find this section interesting.

This section is based on ‘The eight attributes…” workshop that is delivered by Postgraduate Careers. To see when these workshops are on, please visit the “what’s on” (link) pages on this site.

In 1999 Constance Holden wrote an article for the journal Science which outlined the ‘eight attributes of highly successful postdocs’ (see the original article here). How do each of these areas relate to you?

The Eight Areas are:

  1. Get ahead of the curve
  2. Follow your heart
  3. Remember the big picture
  4. Acquire a pedigree
  5. Do your homework
  6. Bring money
  7. Forget the want ads
  8. Be a team player

Each section will take you to a brief overview of what was discussed in the original paper, along with some exercises to help you explore how the attribute might apply to your current and future situation.

Download the workbook and as you work through each of the sections refer to the exercises in the workbook to help you.
