Welcome to Careers & Employments web pages dedicated to the needs of postgraduate students at QUT. As a postgraduate student you are in the top 3% of educated people within Australia. Career Support for Research PostgraduatesQUT has a commitment to increasing the research output of the University. This will mean increasing numbers of postgraduate research positions in all disciplines throughout the University. Supporting you, the research postgraduate student, is key in allowing you to make the most of your time here at QUT. This site has been designed with you in mind. It contains many resources and tips to help you step through what can sometimes be a minefield towards your future dream career. As a postgrad research student you may be considering a career in academia. You may well be recognising that careers in academia are becoming hard to come by (permanent roles anyway). This site is not designed to persuade you to follow any particular field or direction, more to enable you to consider all options open and to help you reach a considered decision as to the best way forward for you. Career Support for Coursework PostgraduatesWhile this portion of the site has been designed with research postgraduates in mind, there will be many resources here that will be of use to you. You can also visit the Careers & Employment web pages and select undergraduate as many of the resources there will also be appropriate to you. WhoPostgraduate Careers Support is provided at QUT through the Careers & Employment office by Dr Alan McAlpine. Alan comes with a wealth of experience having worked with postgraduates in the UK, New Zealand and here in Australia. Alan set up the first Australasian postgraduate careers support service at the University of Auckland in 2004. Alan believes we all have a career story to tell, regardless of what stage we are at in our lives. Alan’s own story starts at the University of Edinburgh where he graduated with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1992, so he understands the highs and lows of completing a research doctorate. His work included a series of postdoctoral positions that took him around the UK as well to here in Brisbane. His career took a turn in 1996 when after attending an intensive career management workshop he decided that he wanted to pursue his future in a ‘slightly’ different direction. After working for a career development organisation in Cambridge in the UK (delivering intensive career workshops nationally for PhD students) he moved to Brisbane for 4 years and worked as a consultant delivering support to people at all stages in their careers. He has experience in running a range of workshops as well as working with many people individually. Alan looks forward to meeting you along your career journey. What is in this siteWhile the list below and that on the front page might indicate that career development is a linear process, often it isn't. For ease the site is laid out in a logical linear fashion and each stage will lead onto the next. However, you may decide to look at different parts at different times, depending on what is happening for you. You may also decide to revisit some of the stages of the site to gather specific information.
