'Career' can be defined as 'an individual's lifelong progression in learning and work' where:

  • progression can take place laterally or vertically or even be disjointed but it would always have a sense of development or moving forward throughout the full lifespan
  • learning includes both formal and informal and training; and
  • work includes paid, unpaid, voluntary, community and life roles in general

Sometimes careers just happen but for most people they require some form of planning in order for them to be realised.

This section of the site introduces a 'career planning model' which QUT Careers and Employment staff uses as the basis for assisting you in planning your career. Work your way through the seven different components of the model if you want help with planning your career.

Further resources and information are also available on the Careers and Employment 'Planning Your Next Career Move' site. This site was developed to provide some assistance you need to deal with the complexities and implications of making your next career move.

If you need help from Careers and Employment staff, please call 07 3138 2649 or e-mail careers@qut.edu.au.
