One of the most critical steps involved in making course and career choices is self-awareness. This refers to the extent to which you know yourself. By developing an understanding of yourself, you are in a better position to research and select a career and course that you will enjoy and will be successful at. This section of the website will assist you with gaining a clearer understanding of your story.
What's your story?
Consider the following personal factors to determine how well you know yourself:
- What are your skills and aptitudes?
- What are your interests?
- What are your values?
- What is your personality?
- What factors do you need to consider when making your course/career decision?
Without knowing your likes, dislikes and other key factors associated with your story, it is difficult to make decisions about your career. If you find it difficult to answer some of these questions, we highly recommend doing one or two self-exploration listed below activities to help you develop your story .
The type of activities and the number of activities that should be completed will depend on your individual needs, but you may find it useful to complete more than one to gain a broader perspective.

- My Guide is a section of the 'Myfuture' website, designed to help you with identifying your career direction.
- There are various informational resources as well as on-line questionnaires designed to help you identify factors such as your interests, values, strengths and goals. It also helps you explore occupations and careers that match you!
- Career Quiz is part of the 'Government Job Search' website.
- The quiz consists of a total of 15 questions, which concentrate on identifying your career interest groups. You will be provided with a summary of your career interest group ratings and you may find it useful to further research those areas which you rated as high interest.
- Match My Skills questionnaire is a QUT resource designed to assist individuals with course decision making
- The goal of the questionnaire is to match individuals to QUT undergraduate courses on the basis of personality and abilities. To utilise the questionnaire you will be required to select your country of citizenship.
