This section addresses possible options available to non-school leavers who are interested in applying for tertiary study at QUT.

Not having completed year 12 is no longer a barrier to tertiary study. There are several ways of assessing whether you have the necessary qualifications, experience and/or skills for entrance into tertiary courses.

What is selection based on?

1. Formal Academic Qualifications

  • Year 12 OP or TE score
  • Tertiary study (eg, Associate Diploma, Diploma)
  • Queensland external senior subjects
  • Bridging and preparatory courses
  • Post-secondary study (eg, Advanced Certificates)

2. Other Qualifications or Experience

For those applicants who do not have formal academic qualifications, there is an Alternative Entry pathway to tertiary study using non-formal qualifications such as:

How do I find out my eligibility for tertiary study?

QTAC provides an Assessment Service to determine whether you have the necessary qualifications or experience for tertiary entrance.

What are my other options?

If it is unlikely that you will be offered your preferred university course, there are a number of options that you may want to consider:

  • Studying another degree course at QUT
  • Enrolling as a QUT visiting student
  • Studying a dual TAFE/QUT award
  • Studying a degree course at another university or accredited provider
  • Completing a diploma and/or advanced diploma studies through TAFE or other accredited providers.

By enrolling in another tertiary course that you are eligible for, you can use your first year results to upgrade to a more preferred course. Check out QUT's information on Upgrading Pathways to University.
